At Cedars, we take enormous pride in the food we serve and the ingredients we use, and we try to make as much from scratch as possible. One of our very favorite menu items to serve are our hand-made samosas. These delicate savory pastries have a flaky exterior of fried dough and a soft filling of herbs, onion, potato and minced meat, though there are many variations!
Samosas were originally an Arab dish that migrated to India many hundreds of years ago, becoming an integral part of our cuisine. Indeed, the poet Amir Khusrao wrote in the year 1300 that the royalty of Delhi was partial to the “samosa prepared from meat, ghee, onion, and so on,” and there are many other historical accounts and depictions of samosas. If you visit India today, you’ll likely see samosas being sold everywhere from stalls on the streets to fine restaurants.
Of course, you don’t have to travel to India to get a delicious and authentic samosa—come to the Cedars! We serve both vegetarian and minced beef samosas alongside two classic Indian chutneys: tamarind and mint-coriander. Samosas are the perfect appetizer for an Indian or Mediterranean meal, and we guarantee that if you get them once you’ll want to get them every time!
Here’s a little video from Cedar’s Instagram of us making our samosas by hand in the kitchen. They’re fresh every day! Come try one!
